Okay, so I saw this Prada Galleria Saffiano Special Edition Bag online and thought, “Wow, that’s a cool bag, but man, it’s expensive!” It’s like $7,500 or something crazy. But the design, it’s so unique. It has this airbrushed look, kind of like a gradient, going from brown to red. It’s made of Saffiano leather, which I guess is fancy, and it’s called a “colorblock” pattern. And the hardware, it’s all gold-tone, which really pops against the brown and red.
I really liked it, so I started thinking, “Could I make something like this myself?” I’m no professional, but I’ve done some DIY stuff before. So I went online to look for materials. I found some Saffiano leather scraps in brown and red, not exactly like the Prada bag, but close enough. They are just pieces left, not a whole piece, so it is not expensive, but I just want to give a shot, so I bought them.
Then, I went to find gold-tone hardware, like buckles and a zipper, and maybe even some feet for the bottom of the bag. I got them all from online shop, not expensive but looks really great.
The next step was figuring out the shape and size of the bag. I found some pictures of the Prada bag from different angles and used them as a reference. I sketched out a rough design on paper, then made a pattern out of cardboard. I tried to copy the shape of the Galleria bag. It’s not easy as it looks. The size I made is about the same as the “small” version of the Prada bag.
Once I had my pattern, I cut the leather pieces. This was the scary part because I didn’t want to mess up. I put the brown and red pieces together to make them like one piece of leather, then cut the shape I designed before. It took a while, but I managed to get all the pieces cut out. Stitching the leather was tough. I used a heavy-duty needle and thick thread, and I did it all by hand. It wasn’t perfect, but it held together. I’m not good at stitching, I know, but I am still trying hard!
Adding the hardware was easier. I punched some holes and attached the buckles and zipper. I also added the handles, which I made from rolled-up strips of the brown leather. It starts looking like a bag now!

I just used the sponge to make the color transition, not really hard.
And there you have it, my homemade version of the Prada Galleria bag. It’s definitely not a perfect replica, but I’m pretty proud of it. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot about working with leather. Plus, I saved a ton of money! Maybe I’ll try making other designer-inspired bags in the future. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get good enough to sell them someday. I will keep trying.
